Anthropic shipped Claude Sonnet 5 on Tuesday as the new default for Free and Pro users, also serving it to Max, Team, and Enterprise customers, and priced it at a fraction of the flagship Opus 4.8 it now shadows on most work. Introductory API pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026, rising to $3 and $15 after that. Opus 4.8 sits at $5 and $25.
The pitch is that mid-tier is catching up. On SWE-bench Pro, Sonnet 5 posts 63.2%, up from Sonnet 4.6’s 58.1% and closing on Opus 4.8’s 69.2%. Terminal-Bench 2.1 climbs to 80.4% from 67.0%. On the GDPval-AA v2 knowledge-work eval, Sonnet 5 lands at 1,618, a hair above Opus 4.8’s 1,615. That last number is the one to sit with: the cheap model just brushed past the expensive one on the eval closest to what enterprise buyers actually pay for.
Anthropic says the new tokenizer maps identical inputs to roughly 1.0 to 1.35 times as many tokens as before, and the introductory price was calibrated to keep the migration close to cost-neutral. Sticker discount, wallet parity, volume story.
Customers on cue. Sualeh Asif, co-founder of Cursor, credits the model with helping agents “stay on plan, follow our conventions, and ship clean multi-step changes.” Daniel Shepard, a senior engineer at Zapier, said a Salesforce-plus-launch-email job that “used to stall halfway” now finishes end to end.
The safety disclosure is where the vibe shifts. On a Firefox 147 exploit evaluation built with Mozilla, Sonnet 5 produced 0.0% working exploits, matching the prior Sonnet’s 0.0%, but its partial-success rate rose to 13.2% from 8.8%. Opus 4.8 sits at 68.8% on the same eval, and a model listed as Mythos 5 at 88.4%. Anthropic flipped cyber safeguards on by default, citing the incremental gains.
The context isn’t subtle. Anthropic confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the SEC on June 1, 2026; OpenAI filed roughly a week later. Sonnet 5 is a product launch and a pre-roadshow argument, the case that Anthropic can bend the cost curve for agentic workloads while its rival is still writing its own S-1. Every previous platform IPO cycle, from the 2019 SaaS wave to the 2020–2021 cloud-infra listings, rewarded companies that could tell a credible unit-economics story on the eve of pricing. Anthropic has just written its opening slide.
