Meta launched Muse Spark 1.1 on Thursday and, for the first time in the company’s history, put a price tag on its own models. The paid developer API from Meta Superintelligence Labs charges $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens, slotting the agentic coding model between Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 4.5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5 mini on the cheap end, and undercutting Claude Sonnet 4.6 on the expensive end.

The pricing is the story. Meta spent years defining itself against the closed labs by shipping Llama weights for free, a strategy that traded revenue for developer mindshare and platform gravity. Muse Spark 1.1 is the pivot. An open-source variant is promised, but undated.

Mark Zuckerberg posted on X to announce it, which is itself the news. His last post on the platform was in July 2023, roughly the week Twitter rebranded. Three years of silence, broken to say: “Our focus is on delivering strong agentic and multimodal models at very low cost,” with “more to come soon.” The choice of venue reads as deliberate. Meta wants developers, and developers still argue about code on X.

Alexandr Wang, Meta’s AI chief, called Muse Spark 1.1 the company’s “strongest model for agentic and coding work yet,” and said it was trained “to be able to work well with all of the most popular harnesses that developers use today.” That’s a direct pitch at the Cursor-and-Claude-Code layer of the market Anthropic currently owns. The model ships with a 1 million token context window, with active memory compaction that Meta says preserves critical steps across long agent runs, and substantial gains on real-world tasks like bug diagnosis, feature work in enterprise codebases, and large code migrations.

It’s Wang’s second model since taking over, three months after his first. And it landed on the same day OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 family, in the same week SpaceXAI shipped a new Grok. Every major lab is now shipping into every other lab’s launch window, which is what a market looks like when the free-distribution era ends and the pricing sheet becomes the product.
