Apple briefly touched a $5 trillion market capitalization on Tuesday, becoming the second company in history to hit the mark and doing it in a manner that inverts the prevailing story about how large-cap tech is supposed to win in 2026. Shares rose as much as 1.8% intraday, peaking at $342.89 for a market value of $5.036 trillion before settling back near $4.96 trillion. Per Bloomberg, the stock needs to close above $340.43 to hold the milestone.
The context is what makes the print interesting. Nvidia got to $5 trillion in October by selling shovels to every hyperscaler willing to swing one. Apple got there by not digging. Its fiscal 2025 capex was $12.7 billion. Alphabet is planning $205 billion in capex for 2026. Microsoft has bumped its annual spending plan to as much as $190 billion, Amazon to as much as $145 billion. Apple’s shares are up 25% year-to-date; Nvidia’s are up 6%.
That gap is the story. The market spent 2024 and 2025 rewarding companies that promised to spend infinity on AI infrastructure. In mid-2026 it’s rewarding the one large-cap that visibly refused, and is instead outsourcing the hard part of generative AI (a revamped Siri now runs on Google’s technology) while pushing pricing power through the installed base.
The pricing power is being pushed aggressively. Apple lifted MacBook and iPad prices last month, citing memory shortages. It rolled out Upgrade, an iPhone lease program with Klarna starting at $17.99 a month for up to two years. The fall lineup, including the iPhone 18 range and a foldable iPhone, arrives into a demand environment the company is actively engineering.
All of this lands five weeks before a CEO transition. John Ternus takes over from Tim Cook on September 1. The handoff is arriving with the stock at a record and the company’s strategic posture, capital-light, distribution-heavy, agnostic on whose model powers Siri, fully legible to Wall Street. Ternus inherits the highest-margin refusal in the industry.
