Tesla is telling staff it plans to put Cybercabs on Austin’s public roads by the end of August, starting with employee rides before folding the two-seat vehicles into its existing Robotaxi service a few days later, according to The Information. People familiar with the effort say the timeline is an internal target and could slip.

The launch, whenever it lands, is a curious kind of milestone. The Cybercab has no steering wheel and no brake pedal. It also runs the same Full Self-Driving stack, on the same hardware, as the Model Ys already ferrying passengers in Texas and Florida. Nothing about its capabilities is new. What’s new is the absence of the controls.

The fleet doing the actual work is smaller than the press cycle suggests. A Texas DMV dashboard lists 186 Model Ys registered for Austin Robotaxi, but only about 17 are running without a safety monitor, down from roughly 25 in the spring. Tesla reported 380,000 cumulative driverless miles across its Robotaxi hubs in July. Waymo, which began commercial driverless service in 2020, has surpassed 220 million rider-only miles. That’s a roughly 580x gap.

Production is running ahead of the software curve. Gigafactory Texas has installed capacity for more than 125,000 Cybercabs a year, and Q2 output has already started. On the same earnings call, Musk offered the tell: “We need to accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road.”

Meanwhile, the promotional apparatus is running at full tilt. Tesla’s Robotaxi account is running a launch-event draw that closes August 23. Remote monitors will stand ready to take over in Austin, Chicago, and San Francisco. Tesla’s regulatory status for charging fares in a wheel-free vehicle remains unclear, and Amazon’s Zoox has already secured the first US approval to do exactly that.

The Cybercab’s debut, then, is a design statement wrapped around unchanged software, launched into a fleet that has been shrinking, timed to a promotion that ends before the launch it advertises.
