On August 31, Google finished the worldwide rollout of Search Generative AI performance reports inside Search Console, closing a phased release that began June 3 with a select group of UK site owners. Every website in the world can now see which of its pages get cited in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Almost none of them have logged in to look.
The report is deliberately half a report. It shows impressions by page, country, device, date, and time granularity. It shows nothing about clicks, and nothing about the queries that produced the impression. PPC Land put it plainly: “Two dimensions are absent, and they are the two that convert visibility into revenue. There is no click data. There is no query data.”
That absence is the story. Independent research cited by PPC Land pegs the organic click-through rate for queries where AI Overviews appear at 61 percent below baseline; Ahrefs measured a 58 percent drop for top-ranking pages. So Google has handed every site owner a dashboard that confirms whether they’ve been drafted into the surface eating their traffic, without telling them what the surface is doing with them.
A blank report is itself the diagnostic. Google’s help documentation notes a report may be empty because “a site hasn’t received enough impressions in generative AI features on Google Search.” For a small business, that’s the finding. The site isn’t being read by the machine that increasingly answers on its behalf. And because the reports don’t backfill, a baseline pulled today is the only baseline that’ll ever exist for this window.
Google shipped a property-level opt-out toggle alongside the reports, and says the toggle isn’t a ranking signal elsewhere in Search. Opting out means no impressions and no traffic from these features. Page-level exclusion isn’t required until March 3, 2027, under a UK CMA order, giving publishers roughly eighteen months of all-or-nothing before the surgical option arrives.
The precedent worth naming is the launch of Search Console itself in the mid-2000s, when webmaster-tools access became the difference between operators who understood their traffic and operators who guessed. This is that moment, compressed, for the AI answer layer. The dashboard is free. The observation window closes daily.
