Social media has overtaken search as the primary way global consumers find small businesses, according to a Constant Contact survey of more than 5,000 owners reported by Demand Gen Report: 49% now discover new small businesses on social, against 40% who start on a search engine. The number that matters more sits next to it. U.S. consumer preference for shopping primarily at small businesses nearly tripled in five years, from 10% in 2021 to 27% in 2026.

Discovery is moving, and demand is moving with it.

The same survey finds that 73% of small-business owners globally now identify as content creators to some degree, 40% primarily as creators and 33% as owner/creator hybrids. Nearly half (47%) handle every bit of social media management themselves. That’s the operational squeeze: the channel where consumers are looking is also the channel with the highest production tax, and it’s landing on the owner’s desk.

AI is where the pressure is being released. U.S. small-business marketing adoption of AI tools went from 26% in 2023 to 87% by April 2026. Fully 50% of AI users globally say the primary benefit is saving time; 42% of owners use it most for writing copy and content, 38% for analyzing data, and 40% specifically to manage the marketing workload. Constant Contact says its built-in AI trims campaign and email creation time by up to 23%.

Which brings us to TikTok’s timing. Symphony Agent, introduced June 22, 2026 and now accessible through TikTok One, turns a product photo into a finished, trend-informed ad in roughly three minutes for a 12-second video and about five for a 20-second cut, with up to three variations per request for A/B testing and a shortlist of 20 recommended creators with fit rationale. Symphony Creative Studio and Symphony Assistant are free for TikTok for Business accounts, with Digital Avatars and API access on separate terms. Output ships labeled, invisibly watermarked, and tagged with C2PA Content Credentials. Translate and Dub isn’t available to users in Texas or Illinois.

An August 2026 Dreamina Seedance 2.5 integration extended generation from 15 seconds up to 30, with multimodal reference inputs raised from 9 to 50. Instagram’s First Draft assembles a rough-cut Reel in under 10 seconds. LinkedIn trims Live recordings into event highlights. TikTok added AI-generated LIVE intros in its composer. Facebook rolled a standalone Creator Studio iOS app in the U.S. and Canada. SocialPilot’s August roundup called it: “this was the month platform AI stopped suggesting and started doing the first pass.”

The doom-loop version of this story is the one where solo owners try to become production studios. The other version is the one the numbers actually describe: the platforms are absorbing the production step, and the owners who show up win the 49%.
