Starting today, September 21, 2026, Gmail’s AI Overviews in search begin their full global rollout to Scheduled Release domains, with feature visibility landing in one to three days. Google’s Rapid Release wave started September 3 and can take up to fifteen days to appear. The feature was previously limited to US users with Gmail set to English. It isn’t anymore.
The mechanic is simple and consequential. A user types a natural-language question into Gmail’s search bar and Gemini returns a concise summary and answer pulled from across multiple conversations, per Google’s Workspace Updates blog, the company’s own framing is “without the digging.” Access requires a Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription or an eligible Workspace account. On the business side, per Technobezz, eligibility spans Business Starter, Standard and Plus, the equivalent Enterprise tiers, and Frontline Plus, with admin defaults on when Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access are enabled. Availability is restricted in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the UK, according to SammyGuru.
Read past the release-notes register, and the implication for any five-to-thirty-person B2B shop running outbound is direct. The impression your prospect forms of your cold email is no longer built from your subject line and preview text. It’s built from a Gemini-authored one-sentence paraphrase of what your email is about, assembled alongside every other pitch in that thread of search results.
Set-up-and-payoff copy dies in that context. So does the clever opener. The value proposition has to sit in the first clause, because the first clause is what gets summarized, and the summary is what gets read. Subject lines and CTAs now have to function as standalone claims rather than beats in a sequence.
This is the second inbox-layer shift in a week, following Google’s family AI agent quietly reshaping household inboxes. The channel small businesses lean on hardest for acquisition is being re-plumbed at the reading layer, not the sending layer. The senders who noticed first will spend the next eight weeks rewriting.
