Amazon cut off Meta’s Muse agent from Amazon.com on Sunday night, after first asking Meta to voluntarily exclude the store and getting nowhere. Muse users hitting the site now see a popup declaring that “continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use.” Shopify, meanwhile, spent the same weekend confirming the opposite posture: eligible merchant products are already exposed to Meta through Shopify Catalog, and CEO Tobias Lütke publicly confirmed Muse can shop and complete purchases across Shopify storefronts.
Two of the platforms small merchants actually sell on just picked opposite sides of the agentic-commerce question. That’s now a customer-acquisition fact, not a policy debate.
Muse launched Sept. 8 as a multi-step personal agent tied to email, calendar, payments, dining and shopping. One week later it was the No. 1 free app in Apple’s U.S. App Store, ahead of ChatGPT (see our earlier take on Muse’s aggressive consumer push). Amazon’s stated reasons for the block are procedural and security-shaped: no prior notice from Meta, an agent that doesn’t identify itself when it browses, and behavior that appears to capture and store customer credentials.
The financial reason is less procedural. Amazon pulled more than $68 billion in advertising revenue last year, almost all of it dependent on human shoppers scrolling pages of sponsored listings. An agent that pre-filters to one product collapses that surface entirely. Blocking Muse isn’t defense of the customer; it’s defense of the auction.
Shopify’s inverse bet is equally rational. Its merchants don’t sell ads against browsing; they sell products. More discovery surfaces, including agentic ones, is upside. Direct checkout on Meta is active by default for eligible stores, though merchants can deactivate it and route shoppers back to their own site.
For a small B2C owner the practical read is blunt. If you sell only on Amazon, Muse users can’t currently buy from you. If you sell on Shopify, you may already be in Meta’s catalog without having decided to be. The Sales channels → Agentic → Meta settings will tell you which products are eligible, whether checkout is on, and what isn’t supported yet.
Where you list has quietly become who can find you.
