On Sept. 21, 2026, Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke announced on X that every store on the platform now accepts agentic checkout through Shop Pay via Meta’s Muse. Hours earlier, on the Sunday night before, Amazon barred the same agent from amazon.com, telling shoppers via popup that “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang confirmed the Shopify deal the same day, framing it as “Musers access to a wide range of stores.”
Two doors, opened and slammed on the same weekend. The split tells you where each incumbent thinks the money is.
Muse launched Sept. 8 and, one week later, sat at No. 1 free in Apple’s U.S. App Store, ahead of ChatGPT. It’s on WhatsApp, muse.ai, and the iPhone. The Shopify hookup runs through the Universal Commerce Protocol, already interoperable with Perplexity, Gemini, and ChatGPT. Shopify Catalog auto-shares product data with Muse by default; the agent scours it, returns a match to the prompt, and closes with Shop Pay without the shopper ever loading the storefront.
The plumbing beneath that’s not small. Shop Pay crossed $400 billion in lifetime accelerated GMV by June 2026. In Q2 2026, Shopify posted $116 billion in GMV, up 32%, with Shopify Payments at 68% of GMV. In 2025, Shop Pay orders ran roughly 16% higher in average order value than non-Shop Pay orders, and 75% of Shop Pay customers used it again within twelve months. Shopify says shoppers who start with an LLM are 2.5x more likely to reach a product page and convert at roughly 80% higher rates.
“Agentic commerce really excites us. The agents don’t have the same challenges as humans,” said Rohit Mishra, VP of Product at Shopify.
Amazon’s counter-move is legally exposed. In March 2026 it won a preliminary injunction against Perplexity’s Comet browser; on Aug. 4 the Ninth Circuit reversed, ruling the user, not the AI company, accesses Amazon’s computers under federal anti-hacking law. The court denied rehearing Sept. 10. Amazon runs its own Buy for Me agent and booked more than $68 billion in ad revenue last year. That’s what it’s defending, not checkout.
For a Shopify merchant, a distribution channel opened without anyone asking. The catalog fields that read fine to a human read badly to an agent, and the agent is now the shopper.
