OpenAI announced on 5 October that labeled product images will begin appearing beside, or just beneath, the pictures ChatGPT users ask it to generate, with a U.S.-only test group of advertisers switching on later this month. It’s the first native visual ad format inside a mainstream AI assistant, and it arrives pointed at a potential audience of 1.2 billion weekly users.
The commercial logic is almost embarrassingly clean. People generating images in ChatGPT are already in a buying-adjacent headspace, building mood boards, redesigning rooms, picturing outfits. OpenAI’s two launch mockups, both featuring the fictional Heirloom Grocery, make the pitch legible: the ad is the aesthetic, not an interruption of it.
Partner metrics released alongside the announcement read like a pre-emptive answer to every skeptic. Triple Whale found 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT ad visitors were new customers. WorkMagic reported 67% of incremental purchases for wellness brand Dose came from net-new buyers, with 2.3x more incremental orders than last-click attribution captured. DV Rockerbox clocked WeightWatchers’ attributed CPA at 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark. OpenAI’s own analysis noted 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions landed within an hour of the matched impression.
The economics have moved fast. Launch CPMs sat near $60 in February 2026, fell to roughly $25–$35 by April with some as low as $15, and on 5 May OpenAI removed the $200,000–$250,000 minimum ad commitments that had gated early access. The Next Web reported on 31 August that ChatGPT Ads had passed a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days.
Measurement is the open wound. OpenAI’s partner roster now spans 10 click-attribution firms (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, Tenjin), 3 full-funnel partners (Fospha, Measured, INCRMNTAL), plus Haus, Kantar, Cint, Hightouch, Tealium, LiveRamp, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. Yet Farhad Divecha, CEO of U.K. agency Accuracast, told Digiday on 1 October that ChatGPT reported roughly 100 clicks for a campaign where his own tracking recorded 20, impressions swung from thousands to under 100 week-to-week, and reports showed zero conversions two weeks after completed forms arrived.
That gap is the real story. For consumer brands of 5 to 30 people, the window to test cheap, visual, net-new reach is open; the instrumentation to prove what happened inside it’s not.
