As of today, Google Ads will automatically identify and extract high-quality promotions from an advertiser’s website and apply them to campaigns. The feature is default-on for any Search or Performance Max campaign tied to a Google Business Profile location, and the opt-out window closed with the activation itself.
Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable surfaced the notification email on October 5, forwarded along by LinkedIn user Arpan Banerjee. That gave advertisers seven days. Google framed it as housekeeping: keep the website’s promotional details up to date, or upload promotions manually when exact control over what is shown is needed, such as specific start and end dates.
The mechanics are the giveaway. Each automated promotion serves for under 24 hours and renews only while the offer is still visible on the site, meaning the live website is the source of truth. A dusty “15% off your first order” in a footer, a trade-only coupon on a buried landing page, an expired Labor Day banner that nobody got around to pulling down, any of it’s now eligible to appear alongside paid search results, labelled “Google AI” in the Added by column.
Reporting is retrospective and partial. Only assets that have served show up in the Assets section; zero-impression assets won’t appear there. Advertisers find out what Google decided to say on their behalf after it has already said it.
This is the second default-on expansion in roughly a month, following the customer-list conversion auto-enrollment that caught most small businesses flat-footed and the September AI Max auto-upgrade of broad match and automatically created assets. The template repeats: email notice, helpful framing, opt-out default, short clock.
Each individual rollout is defensible. The cumulative effect is that the surface area of a Google Ads account the advertiser actually controls shrinks every few weeks, and the audit burden ratchets in the opposite direction. The business owner’s job is no longer writing the ad. It’s policing what the website quietly volunteered to say.
