Google begins removing Google Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, and phone-projected Android Auto today, replacing it with Gemini across a rollout that’ll reach every eligible device over the next few weeks. There’s no rollback. Google built-in cars, Google TV, Home speakers, and smart displays stay on Assistant for now, but the phone in your customer’s pocket doesn’t.
The headline reads like a product swap. It isn’t. Assistant, which launched in 2016 and is being retired at roughly ten years old, was a command-matcher: keywords in, deterministic local results out. Gemini is generative. When someone says “Hey Google, find a pizza place near me,” the model synthesizes an answer rather than retrieving one, and the signals it weighs to compose that answer are different from the ones Assistant matched against.
Old “Hey Google” invocations still work, per Tom’s Guide as cited by Implicator. The interface is preserved. The ranking layer underneath it isn’t.
For any B2C founder whose customers arrive by voice, that’s the whole story. Review recency, review sentiment, the narrative language inside a Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, and conversational copy on the actual website all become weightier inputs, because a generative model reasons over prose the way Assistant never did. Short keyword bait is a weaker asset. A profile that reads like it was written for a human describing the business out loud is a stronger one.
The scale isn’t hypothetical. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told analysts on the Q2 fiscal 2026 earnings call, as reported by TheStreet, that the Gemini app had reached 950 million monthly active users with daily active users tripling year over year. Whatever ships today ships to that audience.
It also ships with rough edges. Patrick O’Rourke of XDA reported frequent “something went wrong” errors in Gemini’s Android Auto integration, and Ryan Whitwam of Ars Technica noted the model “sometimes goes off on a tangent or forgets that it does, in fact, have access to a particular tool.” A ranking system that occasionally forgets its own tools is a ranking system with unusual variance in what it surfaces.
This is the second local-discovery layer to shift under small businesses this week; see how iOS 27’s Visual Intelligence is reshaping local discovery on iPhone. Two operating systems, one direction of travel: the intent-matched local result is being replaced by the synthesized one.
