OpenAI started testing Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT on September 16, a paid format that lets a shopper click an ad and then talk to a business-sponsored bot before ever touching the brand’s own site. Today the Shopify app that plugs merchant catalogs into ChatGPT Ads goes international, extending a surface that OpenAI says already runs at a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate as of late August, spans more than 60 countries, and carries tens of thousands of advertisers.

In OpenAI’s framing, “After seeing a relevant ad, a user can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent in ChatGPT,” and “follow a link to the business’s website when they’re ready to take the next step.” Quartz’s example is a shopper clicking a dining-table ad and asking about dimensions or finish before the handoff. The Register calls it “a typical sponsored content chatbot” embedded in ChatGPT instead of on a brand’s own site. Both readings are correct, which is the interesting part.

For a small business, this is a third paid-discovery channel taking shape alongside Google’s keyword auctions and Meta’s interest graph. Call it conversational intent. It also arrives paired with a HubSpot CRM integration and an AI Growth Bundle that stacks HubSpot Starter and credits at up to 65% off for a year, buy-one-get-one-free ChatGPT Business seats, and a $750 match on ChatGPT Ads spend for accounts opened by September 30. That’s a familiar playbook: subsidize the on-ramp, capture the workflow.

The uncomfortable part is that Sponsored Agents perform only as well as the content feeding them. Product copy, landing pages, and positioning language now shape what the agent says to a buyer mid-conversation, which is the same layer that decides whether answer engines surface a business at all. It sits on top of HubSpot’s agent-heavy platform rewire and Google’s ongoing AI Max rewrite of keyword accounts. Three channels, one underlying asset.

Which is why the ongoing content-and-positioning work is the actual bottleneck, not the ad buy. It’s the kind of continuous, done-for-you customer-growth work LemonLime is built to prepare proactively, without another workflow to run.
