Pinterest is putting a price tag on the part of its search product that used to be free real estate. At its September 17 Pinterest Presents summit, the company announced Visual Search Ads, a beta format that inserts paid placements directly into visual search results and Pin closeups. It’s rolling out to eligible advertisers in every Pinterest ad market in the coming weeks.
The pitch, delivered by CEO Bill Ready, hinges on one number: more than 96% of the roughly 80 billion monthly Pinterest searches are unbranded. That’s the entire commercial premise. Shoppers arrive knowing the look and not the label, and until now that gap was navigated organically. Now it’s an auction.
Chief business officer Lee Brown handed advertisers the scale numbers to justify buying in: 640 million monthly users, more than half of them Gen Z, and paid clicks up 5x over the last three years. Q2 revenue climbed 18% to more than $998 million, pushing Pinterest past the $1 billion quarterly threshold, with guidance of $1.19 billion to $1.21 billion for the next quarter. The ad business is working, and the company is monetizing further up the funnel while it can.
Chloe Wix, Pinterest’s vice president of go-to-market, framed the format as “a major step forward in helping brands drive measurable lower-funnel outcomes with the campaign assets that they already have,” with “no net new creative required.” Translation: your existing catalog is the ad.
The underlying machinery is Pinterest Intelligence, running on Nvidia Blackwell GPUs and Nvidia Dynamo, with an expanded Nvidia partnership letting Pinterest Assistant process 25x more visual context per request. Adjacent releases matter for small B2C catalogs too: Performance+ is getting Priority Products and a self-serve A/B testing tool, and App Promotion enters global beta with a cited 85% cost-per-install improvement from one U.S. enterprise advertiser between August 2025 and August 2026.
The context is worth naming. Google recently turned visual search into a measurable traffic source, social platforms officially overtook search as the top way consumers find small businesses, and OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT. Discovery is being repriced across every surface at once. A five-to-thirty-person catalog in home, fashion, beauty, or food has a beta window, not a runway.
