At DevDay on September 29, in front of 2,500 attendees and inside more than 20 announcements, OpenAI quietly converted ChatGPT from a chatbot into a distribution surface. The headline most publications ran with was GPT-6.1 Sol, priced at roughly a fifth of GPT-6 Astra’s input and output tokens, with cached input at $0.10 per million. The headline small-business owners should’ve read was different: 1.2 billion weekly users now have an app directory inside the product they already open every morning.

Sam Altman described the new plugin extensions as “essentially entire applications that feel native to ChatGPT.” Pressed on what that meant structurally, he added: “With plugin extensions, you can build an editor, a dashboard, a whole workspace directly into ChatGPT and Codex.” Per InfoQ, developers can ship sidebar experiences, interactive conversation panels, custom file viewers, and automations triggered through the new MCP Events spec. The in-conversation suggestion layer that OpenAI started rolling out last month now has a native app shelf behind it.

The launch slate tells you who understood. Notion, Vercel, Adobe, Figma, HubSpot, Salesforce, Cognition’s Devin, and smaller shops like OpenClaw and Dactyl shipped on day one. Sign in with ChatGPT launched with 16 partners. The enterprise OpenAI Marketplace opened with 30-plus. CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC that enterprise business has doubled since July and that Q3 grew roughly 70% quarter over quarter.

Here’s the part worth sitting with. There’s no announced revenue share. No commission. No gatekeeping committee of the sort Apple and Google spent fifteen years constructing. Users approve each plugin’s access individually, per TechCrunch, and that’s the whole review layer right now. ChatGPT’s connected-app graph already runs past 4,000, and the directory a five-to-thirty-person company could appear in today is roughly as crowded as the App Store was in late 2008.

Every platform shift has a window where the rules haven’t been written and the incumbents haven’t noticed. This is that window. It usually closes faster than anyone covering it says it’ll.
