Google began rolling out Gemini 4 Argon inside AI Mode on October 13 to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally, two weeks after a quieter Ultra-only debut. The benchmarks will get the headlines. The more consequential change is a line of behavior Google isn’t marketing: AI Mode responses now carry source links again, something that quietly stopped working after the Gemini 3.8 Flash release.
Nick Fox and Robby Stein, writing for Google, said Argon “brings big improvements to tackling nuanced, multi-step tasks in AI Mode” and that “It’s better at understanding your intent and following your instructions in back and forth conversations.” Google is blunter about the stylistic shift, promising that “Argon answers questions more directly with less hedging, doesn’t repeat itself more than necessary, and skips clichés throughout the responses.”
Taken together, the two statements describe a model tuned to sound less like an AI and more like a confident editor. That’s the product arc. The citation restoration is the business arc.
For a small business, inline source links are the difference between being an invisible input to someone else’s answer and being a named, clickable destination at the moment of highest commercial intent. The surface sits behind a paywall for now, $19.99 a month for Pro and starting at $99.99 for Ultra, with the Pro rollout still in progress. But Search Engine Roundtable reports Google is already testing an AI Mode sidebar on the main results page, which is how paid features historically graduate to the free tier.
Treat the link behavior as temporary. Google removed citations once already with a model swap, and nothing prevents the next one. The durable work is the same work that made Google’s push to make visual search a measurable traffic source actionable, and the same work behind how ChatGPT quietly became a small-business discovery surface: clear sourcing, unambiguous entity names, specific verifiable claims.
