At its September 23 Made On YouTube event, YouTube said its Shopping affiliate program now counts more than 1.3 million creators, has driven 13x growth in gross merchandise volume over the last two years, and will expand to 35 countries by year-end. The headline feature, Affiliate Campaigns, lets brands discover creators and send targeted invitations offering flat fees plus exclusive commission rates, per PPC Land’s reading of the forum post. In plain terms: a sponsorship-affiliate hybrid that doesn’t require a five-figure flat-fee gamble up front.
For a small B2C product brand, this is the first time YouTube’s creator economy has been structured as something resembling a performance channel you can staff from a laptop. The old model asked you to pay an agency, pay a creator, and hope. The new model asks you to approve a retail feed, pick creators, and set the commission. If nothing sells, you don’t pay.
The second shift is on the demand side. Ask YouTube, the platform’s conversational search surface, is becoming a shopping companion that can return organized recommendations and comparison tables, according to TechCrunch. Emily Moxley, YouTube’s VP of Product Management for Viewer AI, described it as “a custom Gemini model that maps the viewer’s most complex questions to the exact second that the video provides the answer.” Creator review footage, in other words, is being parsed into a product-answer layer.
The caveats are real. Relevant Audience notes YouTube gave no rollout timing or geography for the shopping features, and that both the 13x GMV figure and a 2x click claim are unaudited YouTube numbers. Discoverability inside Ask YouTube will reward brands that enforce consistent product names, structured attributes, and chaptered videos. It’s the same discipline LTK’s conversational shopping engine reshaped affiliate economics for small product brands demanded, now arriving on the surface where social platforms the top way consumers find small businesses actually do their research.
Platforms don’t announce distribution. They announce terms. These are the terms.
