As of September 2026, businesses can run paid Threads campaigns without maintaining an Instagram account, ending a three-year coupling that quietly kept a lot of brands out of the auction. Meta’s update, surfaced first by Social Samosa’s reading of the company’s own notice, lets any business launch ads directly from a native Threads profile. A follow-on change effective Sept. 26, reported by MediaPost, lets advertisers already on both apps diversify their Threads profile name from their Instagram handle.
The structural read is simple. Threads, now at 500 million users, is being treated as a standalone ad surface rather than an Instagram feature. That reclassification matters more than any product tweak, because the Instagram prerequisite was functionally a filter against B2B founders, local service operators, and any brand that never built an IG presence to begin with.
Early pricing suggests the filter was doing real work. Common Thread Collective, writing on September 21, pegged Threads placements at CPMs of $8 to $15, running 30 to 50 percent below Instagram feed rates. That gap is the signature of a thin auction, and thin auctions close quickly once advertisers notice.
The arbitrage window is the story for small operators. A 5-to-30-person team that competes on expertise, commentary, or timely takes has a genuine targeting edge on a text-first surface, and the Meta Ads Manager plumbing is already familiar. The practical move: create a native Threads profile, scope a modest campaign to Threads Feed only, and measure CPM and click quality against existing Instagram or Facebook placements before the gap normalizes. Meta has said the rollout is gradual and the option may not yet be visible to every advertiser.
It’s the third placement unlock in two weeks, following YouTube’s new creator-commission channel and Pinterest’s paid visual-search placements. As WERSM put it, “A brand that has little reason to exist on Instagram may still fit Threads if it can participate in conversation, expertise or real-time culture.” Requiring an Instagram account created friction before a brand had even tested that possibility. The friction is gone. The pricing that reflected it won’t last.
