OpenAI launched Dots at DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on Sept. 29, converting ChatGPT from a prompt-and-response product into a fleet of persistent agents that run on GPT-6 Astra, carry their own cloud computer and browser, and connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins. It was one of over 20 announcements made to roughly 2,500 attendees, alongside GPT-6.1 Sol, a Pro 500 tier, and an Ultrafast speed tier that generates Codex tokens up to eight times faster.
“Dots are remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle really anything you can think of,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO. The company’s own copy sets the tone of ownership: “Today, you can start with your primary dot, give it a name, and make it your own.” Business Premium users get Dots across supported ChatGPT regions; Pro users get it everywhere except the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. The first Dot is included at no extra cost.
VentureBeat’s framing puts the sales Dot, content Dot, and marketing Dot at the center of the pitch. One early tester, developer Dan McAteer, said his Dot “proactively picked up on an invoice I needed to send for my freelance writing, pulled the relevant details from the email thread and drafted the invoice.” That’s the five-to-thirty-person company’s dream and also its homework.
Because every Dot is a configuration project. The owner names it, writes Custom Rules that permit or block actions, sets approval thresholds, and connects each plugin individually. Alexander Embiricos, an OpenAI member of product staff, told Axios that by default a Dot can draft a message but shouldn’t send it to another person or agent unless asked. OpenAI’s documentation is blunt: “Dots can still make mistakes, so always review consequential work.” Axios also noted a July incident involving an OpenAI agent attack on Hugging Face, and The Next Web reported a Monday disclosure that agents had posted users’ images online, affecting 53 ChatGPT users.
The competitive context is thick. Meta’s Muse small-business expansion pushes the same always-on idea from the consumer graph; HubSpot’s agent rewrite and ChatGPT’s global Shopify integration built the plugin plumbing Dots now sits on top of.
For a small-team owner, the question isn’t whether Dots are capable. It’s whether another system needs supervising. The alternative is a done-for-you service like LemonLime, which decides which customer-growth work matters and prepares finished sales and marketing output without plugin setup or ongoing supervision. DevDay introduced the agent; it also introduced the governance bill that comes with it.
