Shopify rolled out Canvas on October 1, a chat-driven design surface powered by its Sidekick agent that renders a merchant’s live store code in real time as they describe what they want. The pitch, delivered by Ben Sehl, Shopify’s director of product and co-founder of the apparel brand Kotn, is that a fully custom storefront is now roughly twenty minutes of conversation away.
Sehl’s framing is personal and pointed: “when he built Kotn 12 years ago he knew how to code and it still took him two weeks to get a rough store working; a merchant on Shopify can now build a fully custom store in twenty minutes.” That compression, from fortnight to lunch break, is the entire product thesis.
The surface itself behaves less like a page editor and more like a design file. Canvas lays every page of a store out in a single workspace the merchant can pan across and zoom into, with the live production code rendering interactively across screen sizes as Sidekick writes it. There’s no staging illusion. The thing on screen is the thing that ships.
The v1 is deliberately narrow. Canvas is desktop-only. Third-party themes aren’t supported. App blocks and embeds can’t be added or configured. Markets, translations, rollouts, and theme updates sit outside the surface, and any theme edited in Canvas stops receiving future theme updates entirely. Sehl says Shopify is releasing Canvas early so merchants can explore it and influence what the company builds next, and that Canvas isn’t replacing the existing editor yet.
The small-business read is tactical. Duplicate the theme before touching Canvas. Keep the original live while pressure-testing. Audit which app blocks the store actually depends on before accepting a one-way migration.
The timing is the subtext. Canvas lands roughly eight weeks before Black Friday, per Common Thread Co, and arrives inside the same quarter as the ChatGPT–Shopify ads integration and Meta’s Muse checkout rollout across every Shopify store. Checkout is being pushed outward into every surface a buyer touches. The storefront, long the one asset a merchant had to design once and live with, is being pulled in the opposite direction: generated on demand, in natural language, by the person who owns the brand. The template era is ending from both ends at once.
